What is an Infectious Disease Specialist?
Infectious disease (ID) specialists are doctors of Internal Medicine who complete two or three additional years of training to become experts in the diagnosis and treatment of infectious diseases.
ID specialists have expertise in infections, including those caused by bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites. ID physicians may also specialize in treating patients with infections due to human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), the cause of AIDS.
In addition, ID specialists are experienced in the use of antibiotics and their potential adverse effects and receive extra training in epidemiology, immunology and infection control.
